WARRIORS CUT COSTS, DEAL BIG BOGUT TO BIG D Thursday, July 7, 2016
The Dallas Mavericks acquired center Andrew Bogut and a future 2nd-round draft pick from the Golden State Warriors for a future conditional 2nd-round draft pick.
What does it give the Dallas Mavericks?
This is the second summer in a row the Mavs have been searching for a defense-first center, and they get exactly that here in Bogut. Dallas somewhat lucks out in landing the bruising Aussie, since the Warriors had little choice but to shed his $11 million salary in the wake of signing superstar Kevin Durant. Bogut isn't a superstar but he is definitely an above-average defense-first NBA pivot. This is a very nice pickup by Dallas.
What does it give the Golden State Warriors?
In the coming season the Warriors may truly regret this one. Bogut got very little publicity as a key member of Golden State's 2015 title-winning team, but he was quietly a real 'glue guy' for the Warriors. He was a member of the NBA's All-Defensive Second Team for 2015-16, a testament to his toughness and rim protection. And while he sometimes was replaced as a starter when the team needed more offense, Bogut gave the running, 3-shooting club a lot of balance. Considering the lack of defensive depth remaining now in Golden State, this is a tough trade to like--even though it was done to clear salary to sign Durant.
Fantasy Impact
Bogut is likely to start regularly for Dallas, and will probably keep putting up his strong numbers (in blocks, field goal percentage, and rebounds). He might even play more minutes than he did with Golden State, since he joins a team that's not quite as stacked talent-wise. Ironically, he's replaced in Golden State by Zaza Pachulia (who was the Mavericks' starting center last season). Don't expect Pachulia to bring much to the table fantasy-wise.
