TEAGUE TO INDY, HILL TO UTAH, PICK TO ATLANTA IN 3-WAY DEAL Thursday, July 7, 2016
In a three-team trade, the Indiana Pacers acquired point guard Jeff Teague from the Atlanta Hawks; Atlanta acquired a 1st-round draft pick in 2016 (No. 12 overall-Taurean Prince) from the Utah Jazz; and Utah acquired combo guard George Hill from Indiana.
What does it give the Indiana Pacers?
Pacers management was clearly unhappy with the team's makeup after the Pacers' first-round playoff loss (since head coach Frank Vogel was shown the door). Adding Teague shows the team is further committed to a new direction, and he's a nice pickup here. Assuming his knee heals fully by next season, Teague provides an upgrade over Hill. Teague was an All-Star in 2014-15, and he's much more offensively consistent and productive than Hill. His salary is the same as Hill's as well, so this is a strong move.
What does it give the Atlanta Hawks?
Losing Teague's talent and leadership hurts a bit, but the Hawks accomplish several key goals with this deal. First, they free up significant salary; second, they open up a starter's job for gifted young point guard Dennis Schroder; and third, they garner a lottery pick in this year's draft. It's a fairly nice haul overall for Atlanta.
What does it give the Utah Jazz?
This is a curious deal by the Jazz. While Hill will certainly help sort out a muddled backcourt picture and provide solid two-way leadership, he might not be quite as talented as whichever player Utah could have added with the No. 12 overall selection at this year's draft. Morever, he's far more expensive than a rookie would have been. That said, the Jazz is already well-stocked with young talent so a veteran leader makes some sense.
Fantasy Impact
The biggest winner fantasy-wise here will be dynasty league owners of Schroder. He has some star potential, and this deal likely provides him major minutes in Atlanta's backcourt. Teague's value stays roughly the same as it was when he was healthy in Atlanta, since he'll likely play an identical role as he did with the Hawks. Hill probably sees a downgrade in fantasy fortunes, assuming future star combo guard Dante Exum returns fully healthy in the coming campaign. That said, Exum probaby loses fantasy value with Hill around, as do Alec Burks, Rodney Hood, Trey Burke, Raul Neto, and especially Shelvin Mack.
