This is a steal for the Rockets. McDaniels has rare athleticism and defensive instincts, along with the untapped overall upside to eventually be a star. Canaan is a solid point guard but doesn't have the potential McDaniels does. McDaniels can provide energy and defense right away for Houston as they move forward in the West playoff hunt.

It's understandable the 76ers want to stockpile picks but their moves on deadline day are baffling. In return for two potential future All-Stars (McDaniels and point guard Michael Carter-Williams), all they get in return are draft picks and a solid--not stellar--point guard in Canaan. They'll have some great drafts in the coming years, but at what point is it time to commit to clear talents?

Canaan should see a major uptick in minutes and production, since Philly's backcourt has been decimated by injuries and now trades. It won't be a shocker if Canaan averages in the neighborhood of 15 points and seven assists per game the rest of this season (assuming he can beat out 10-day-contract holdover Tim Frazier for starter minutes). Look for the production of McDaniels to stay steady (if erratic) the rest of this season, as he'll likely keep coming off the bench now that he's in Houston. The long-term keeper appeal of McDaniels suffers a little here on the Rockets, but he remains a major talent.
