Washington Wizards Eastern Southeast
Trade Details
GEORGE HILL HEADED TO THE BUCKS Friday, December 7, 2018
In a three-team trade, the Milwaukee Bucks acquired guard George Hill and a second-round draft pick in 2021 from the Cleveland Cavaliers, and center/forward Jason Smith from the Washington Wizards; the Cavaliers acquired guard Matthew Dellavedova, center/forward John Henson, a first-round draft pick in 2021 and a second-round draft pick in 2021 from Milwaukee, and a second-round draft pick in 2022 from Washington; the Wizards acquired forward Sam Dekker from Cleveland.
What does it give the Milwaukee Bucks?
In Hill, the Bucks land a solid veteran guard who can back up starter Eric Bledsoe at the point, or play off the ball next to either Bledsoe or starting shooting guard Malcolm Brogdon. Hill provides leadership qualities, veteran playoff experience and the ability to get red-hot shooting the three-ball. He is a nice addition to a Milwaukee team looking to do damage in the Eastern Conference this season. Smith will provide more big-man depth and insurance up front, while the second rounder headed to the Bucks in this deal originally belonged to Utah.
What does it give the Cleveland Cavaliers?
For the Cavaliers, this move may be the first of many by the club in an attempt to get younger and prepare for the future in a post-LeBron James era. Dellavedova returns to Cleveland after spending parts of three seasons with the Bucks. The man known as 'Delly' will back up promising rookie point guard Collin Sexton in his return to Cleveland. Henson is out indefinitely following wrist surgery but still has some untapped promise as a versatile big man. The Cavs also get two future picks and a swap of second rounders with Milwaukee as part of this deal.
What does it give the Washington Wizards?
For the Wizards, they are swapping out little-used big man Smith in exchange for Dekker (who is currently out indefinitely because of an ankle injury). Still only 24 years old, Dekker could receive a decent amount of minutes at power forward if the Wizards continue to shake up the roster in the coming weeks (which is expected). For now, he will back up the likes of Otto Porter Jr., Markieff Morris and Jeff Green whenever he becomes healthy.
Fantasy Impact
Hill's minutes figure to decrease now that he will back up the likes of Bledsoe and Brogdon in Milwaukee, so fantasy leaguers may need to cut bait with him now. Dellavedova will remain sans fantasy value going from Bledsoe's backup to Sexton's. Both Henson and Dekker may have some sleeper appeal when they return from injury, though neither player can be trusted in fantasy leagues at this point. Smith is an afterthought.
