PATS PICK UP WR/KR KESHAWN MARTIN Thursday, September 17, 2015
The New England Patriots acquired wide receiver Keshawn Martin and a sixth-round draft pick in 2016 from the Houston Texans for a fifth-round draft pick in 2016.
What does it give the New England Patriots?
The Patriots are short of experienced wideouts early this season, with Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola their only healthy veteran regulars. Martin has some definite untapped talent, and at the very least provides the Pats with a solid depth option in both the wideout corps and on special teams. On offense he may be a band-aid depth solution while the team waits a few weeks for starting possession guy Brandon LaFell to return from a foot injury.
What does it give the Houston Texans?
The off-season arrivals of veteran wide receivers Nate Washington and Cecil Shorts doomed Martin to a non-role with Houston. With that in mind, Houston saves some cash here by moving him, and additionally gets a pick upgrade in the bargain.
Fantasy Impact
Martin gets a boost up to fantasy deep sleeper status with this move, since he goes from a middling Houston offense to a potent one in New England (where he has a much better chance at playing regularly). That said, the Pats seem intent on using two pass-catching tight ends, so Martin has an uphill climb for playing time. Keep him on the radar and snap him up if he becomes a regular part of New England's passing game. Martin's arrival also may signal fewer kick return touches for LeGarrette Blount. This trade doesn't affect anyone fantasy-wise in Houston, since Martin wasn't playing.
