DeANDRE HOPKINS FOR DAVID JOHNSON! Friday, March 20, 2020
The Arizona Cardinals acquired wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and a fourth-round draft pick in 2020 from the Houston Texans for running back David Johnson, a second-round draft pick in 2020 and a fourth-round draft pick in 2021.
What does it give the Arizona Cardinals?
This blockbuster trade may have received even greater buzz had there not been a, you know, pandemic going around the world today. Still, this deal is huge for Arizona and their franchise quarterback Kyler Murray. Hopkins is one of the very best wide receivers in the NFL today, so he should help Murray a lot in the latter's sophomore campaign. Dealing Johnson does not hurt Arizona too much following the acquisition of Kenyan Drake last season. Look for Hopkins to make a huge impact in 'Zona.
What does it give the Houston Texans?
This is a very puzzling move by the Texans, especially because they were presumably all in to reach the Super Bowl this year. Now without arguably their best player in Hopkins, it may be a struggle for Houston to overtake the likes of Kansas City and Baltimore. Johnson should provide an upgrade at running back if he can stay healthy (which has not been the case recently), while the draft pick upgrade (from a fourth to a second) helps. However, it is hard to see the Texans winning this trade in the end.
Fantasy Impact
There should not be much slow down in Hopkins' production as a member of the Cardinals moving forward. There will be an adjustment period moving from Deshaun Watson to Murray but Hopkins remains an elite fantasy weapon. Johnson will likely take on a huge role with Watson in Houston, so his fantasy stock figures to soar with the Texans. Drake's stock also rises with Johnson leaving Arizona.
