Abdullah announced his retirement Monday on his personal Instagram account.
Abdullah (concussion) is listed as active Saturday at Houston, BJ Kissel of the Chiefs' official site reports.
Abdullah (concussion) was a full participant in practice on Thursday, B.J. Kissel of Chiefs.com reports.
Abdullah (concussion) is inactive Sunday against the Chargers.
Husain Abdullah "appears to have the edge" on the Chiefs' free safety job.
The competition for the starting spot opposite Eric Berry is wide open, with Abdullah getting the majority of first-team snaps at OTAs. Sanders Commings and third-round CB Phillip Gaines profile as better fits for DC Bob Sutton's scheme and will push Abdullah in camp. Abdullah was out of the NFL in 2012, but impressed the Chiefs in two starts filling in for Kendrick Lewis last season.
Coach Andy Reid said Husain Abdullah is the current favorite for the Chiefs' free safety job.
Abdullah had 27 tackles and an interception playing behind Kendrick Lewis last season. He's best suited for a third safety role, but provides a veteran option if the Chiefs fail to upgrade in the draft. 2013 fifth-round pick Sanders Commings will also compete for a snaps opposite Eric Berry.
Chiefs re-signed S Husain Abdullah to a two-year contract.
Abdullah, 29 in July, couldn't overtake Kendrick Lewis for starting free safety duties last season, but did contribute on special teams and had a 44-yard pick six on defense. He should be Kansas City's third safety in 2014.
Chiefs signed FS Husain Abdullah, formerly of the Vikings.
Abdullah, 27, was graded as a top-25 safety by Pro Football Focus in 2011 before sitting out the entire 2012 season while pursuing religious obligations. The Vikings wanted to sign him to an extension a year ago. This could be an under-the-radar pickup for a Kansas City team needy across from SS Eric Berry.
Free agent S Husain Abdullah will work out for the Chiefs this week.
Abdullah, and his brother Hamza, walked away from the NFL last summer to pursue religious obligations. Husain was also considering hanging up his cleats due to concussion problems. The 27-year-old had an extension with the Vikings lined up, but his religious beliefs forced him to turn it down.
