DEMARCO DEALT TO TITANS, FREEING UP MATHEWS Wednesday, March 9, 2016
The Tennessee Titans acquired running back DeMarco Murray and a 4th-round draft pick in 2016 from the Philadelphia Eagles for a 4th-round draft pick in 2016.
What does it give the Tennessee Titans?
This is a bit of a steal by the Titans, assuming they can get Murray back to his all-world form of 2014. Tennessee's 92.8 yards rushing per game last season placed the Titans a dismal 25th in the 32-team NFL for 2015, and Murray can help turn that issue around. He'll also more importantly take defensive pressure off rising young star QB Marcus Mariota. Tennessee is taking on a lot of salary here, but it's for good reasons and should ultimately help the entire offense.
What does it give the Philadelphia Eagles?
With Chip Kelly gone from the head coaching chair in Philly, the Eagles no longer have a need for two star-level featured tailbacks. Ryan Mathews is still around to carry the load (and was the team's best back last season anyway), so ultimately this is addition by subtraction: that is, subtraction of Murray's big contract, and subtraction of the headache of a running back controversy.
Fantasy Impact
Both Mathews (with the Eagles) and Murray (now with the Titans) get big fantasy value boosts following this deal, regardless of the fantasy format. Both should resume their careers as busy top offensive options, and both should be motivated to prove they should be the top guy again. In Tennessee this trade essentially kills the 2016 fantasy values (again, in all formats) of running backs David Cobb, Antonio Andrews, Dexter McCluster, and Bishop Sankey.
