'SKINS ADD TE DEPTH WITH CARRIER Friday, August 21, 2015
The Washington Redskins acquired tight end Derek Carrier from the San Francisco 49ers for a conditional fifth-round draft pick in 2017.
What does it give the Washington Commanders?
The Redskins needed help at tight end, after losing both Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen to injured reserve. Enter Carrier, who could slide into the No. 2 tight end role behind starter Jordan Reed. Since Carrier has tremendous athleticism, and also because Washington doesn't seem to be enamored with Reed, Carrier could turn out to be a steal for the 'Skins.
What does it give the San Francisco 49ers?
For the Niners, this deal was about alleviating the logjam at the tight end position. San Francisco still has starter Vernon Davis, backups Vance McDonald and Garret Celek, plus Busta Anderson, Blake Bell and Xavier Grimble currently in training camp. Therefore, they could afford to ship Carrier out at this time. That said, did they get enough for him?
Fantasy Impact
Carrier has some sleeper appeal if he challenges Reed for playing time in D.C. Also, Reed's injury history also plays in Carrier's favor this season. He's worth a look in very deep fantasy drafts or as an in-season injury replacement.
