Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFC South
Trade Details
GRONKOWSKI GOES TO TAMPA BAY Tuesday, April 21, 2020
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers acquired tight end Rob Gronkowski and a seventh-round draft pick in 2020 from the New England Patriots for a fourth-round draft pick in 2020.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
This seemed inevitable for quite some time, and now it has happened. Gronkowski, one of the best players in Patriots history, has decided to unretire in order to play with good friend and longtime teammate Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. "Gronk" will turn 31 next month and was last seen as a member of the WWE. So, he may not have the juice to make a real impact anymore. That said, he will still provide an incredible decoy over the middle of the field, which should allow wideouts Mike Evans and Chris Godwin to flourish with Brady under center.
What does it give the New England Patriots?
The Patriots did OK here to get a three-round pick upgrade for a retired football player. That said, is THIS finally the year when New England will fall from grace and no longer compete for division titles? With every move involving one of their cornerstone players, that likelihood increases. The Pats have needs just about everywhere going into the 2020 NFL Draft, so it would not be surprising if they decide to completely rebuild from top to bottom. Head coach Bill Belichick has a plan, certainly. On paper, this team looks very beatable right now.
Fantasy Impact
Gronkowski will almost certainly be overvalued in most league drafts this summer, but he should still provide help from the tight end position. The biggest loser after this trade is clearly O.J. Howard, who was on the trade block even before Gronk's arrival. This trade does not affect the Patriots offense at all, as Gronk was likely going to remain in professional wrestling if the Buccaneers were not interested in him.
