BRIDGEWATER BROUGHT IN BY NEW ORLEANS Wednesday, August 29, 2018
The New Orleans Saints acquired quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and a sixth-round draft pick in 2019 from the New York Jets for a third-round draft pick in 2019.
What does it give the New Orleans Saints?
For New Orleans, this is a great insurance policy (that may eventually turn into a starting QB). Bridgewater is currently on a one-year contract but provides excellent support in case something happens to 39-year-old superstar Drew Brees in 2018. Beyond that, Bridgewater might be the Saints' choice to succeed Brees. Either way, this is a potentially great move (a proactive move, in fact) by the Saints.
What does it give the New York Jets?
For the Jets, the future is now. Sam Darnold, the No. 3 overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, has won the starting quarterback job. Therefore, the team decided to move Bridgewater now (rather than wait until the first major QB injury in-season). New York may have potentially received more in return by a more desperate NFL squad later on this season, but the Jets seem uber-committed to Darnold right now.
Fantasy Impact
Bridgewater's fantasy value has taken a massive hit following this trade, as he no longer has any shot at earning a No. 1 role THIS season. However, his fantasy fortunes for 2019 and beyond look more promising now that he is no longer behind potential franchise QB Darnold (who is the obvious big fantasy winner after this trade). Brees may potentially be the loser here, if New Orleans chooses to go with Bridgewater in '19.
