Lions won't re-sign K David Akers
Tim Twentyman on Twitter
News
Lions GM Martin Mayhew said the team won't re-sign free agent K David Akers.
Forecaster Impact
Akers, 39, made 19-of-24 field goals in his lone season with the Lions. Coach Jim Schwartz stuck by the veteran all season. Akers is likely going to face an ice-cold market and could even retire. The Lions have kickers John Potter and Giorgio Tavecchio currently on the roster. Detroit will likely bring in more competition.

David Akers still hanging on in Detroit
Detroit News
News
Coach Jim Schwartz gave K David Akers yet another vote of confidence Tuesday.
Forecaster Impact
Akers somehow missed a 31-yarder during the Thanksgiving win over the Packers. The Lions worked out three kickers on Monday and three on Tuesday including Shayne Graham, but none of them were signed. Regardless, fantasy owners need to find someone kicking with more confidence as we head into Week 14.

Lions still confident in David Akers
Detroit Free Press
News
Coach Jim Schwartz gave David Akers a vote of confidence after he missed his fifth field goal attempt of the season on Thursday.
Forecaster Impact
Akers, 38, is 15-of-20 on the season and has missed kicks from 31, 45, and 47 yards away, in addition to having two others blocked. The Lions plan to work out kickers this upcoming week, but we'd expect Akers to remain the guy.

Akers still not 100 percent
MLive.com
News
Lions K David Akers hasn't been doing much kicking at OTAs and is not at 100 percent.
Forecaster Impact
Akers had groin surgery after the Super Bowl, which he still hasn't fully recovered from. The kicker has said pushing himself following double-hernia surgery prior to last season caused him to re-aggravate the injury, which he cites as the reason for his woeful 2012. He's taking it slowly this offseason with the hope he'll return to form.

Lions to host David Akers
Detroit Free Press
News
The Lions will host K David Akers for a free-agent visit next week.
Forecaster Impact
Perhaps Detroit is using the Akers visit to put pressure on fellow free agent Jason Hanson, whom the Lions would much prefer to re-sign. Hanson went 32-of-36 (89 percent) on field goals last year. Akers went 29 for 42 (69 percent).

David Akers underwent surgery, won't retire
Mike Garafolo on Twitter
News
Free agent K David Akers has "no intention" of retiring, and recently underwent a "minor surgical procedure" to correct an issue that bothered him in 2012.
Forecaster Impact
Akers dealt with a vague "pelvis" injury last season, but didn't miss any games. He'll surely blame his rough year on the ailment in free agency. Akers underwent a double sports hernia operation in February 2012.

San Francisco officially releases David Akers
Rotoworld.com
News
49ers released K David Akers.
Forecaster Impact
The Sideline View's Adam Caplan reported the move was imminent on Monday. Just one year removed from one of the greatest kicking seasons in NFL history, Akers left the 49ers no choice after shanking 13-of-42 field-goal attempts last season. He narrowly avoided a handful of other misses. Akers' r‚sum‚ is impressive enough that teams should be willing to ignore an off year, but at 38, he may not get a job until a team finds itself in a desperate situation.

Akers as good as gone in San Francisco
CSN Bay Area
News
CSN Bay Area expects the 49ers to move on from K David Akers.
Forecaster Impact
Akers' $3 million salary would be steep even if he hadn't been utterly incompetent in 2012. As it is, he missed 13-of-42 field-goal attempts, an unacceptable number. Beat writer Matt Maiocco believes free agents Lawrence Tynes, Shayne Graham, Nick Novak and Mike Nugent are all possible replacements.
