A battler, he was also a very strong technician. Had quickness, good footwork and would fight his man from the snap to the whistle. Excelled in pass protection. Showed great intangibles. Lacked ideal overall length and athleticism. Was not an overpowering type and had to work hard for his blocks. At times he took unnecessary penalties. Was never a great snapper (when he was forced to play center).
