EAGLES GET GREEN-BECKHAM FROM TITANS FOR KELLY Tuesday, August 16, 2016
The Philadelphia Eagles acquired wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham from the Tennessee Titans for offensive tackle Dennis Kelly.
What does it give the Philadelphia Eagles?
The Eagles need more playmakers on offense, and with Jordan Matthews their only 'sure thing' in the wideout corps it makes sense (on paper) to add a receiver with Green-Beckham's talent level. That said, this is a risky deal for Philly, since Green-Beckham came into the NFL with copious question marks about his maturity and consistency and he hasn't done much to dispel those. Talent-wise this is a 'win,' but it's also a much bigger risk than keeping Kelly would have been.
What does it give the Tennessee Titans?
The Titans have several objectives to accomplish with their offense heading into the 2016 season, and among them are shifting to a more run-heavy system and better protecting franchise QB Marcus Mariota. Enter Kelly, a jumbo-sized and underrated offensive lineman with solid versatility. He can back up several different positions up front, and should help Mariota stay upright more often. The run-more focus also probably made Green-Beckham more expendable.
Fantasy Impact
Despite Green-Beckham's elite-level athleticism, it's hard to see this deal having much fantasy impact for either team involved. The Titans still have multiple potential starters behind clear No. 1 wideout Kendall Wright (including Rishard Matthews, Andre Johnson, Justin Hunter, and others). So, even if Green-Beckham had stayed with Tennessee it looks unlikely he would have played much. Meanwhile things don't get much better for him in Philly, since he has Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor, Rueben Randle, Josh Huff, and Chris Givens ahead of him (and he has to learn a new offense--no small feat considering his slow development with the Titans). As for Kelly, he doesn't look likely to start anytime soon but he should at least help Mariota a little fantasy-wise.
