CARDS GET JONES, PATS GET COOPER & PICK IN SWAP OF TALENTED LINEMEN Tuesday, March 15, 2016
The Arizona Cardinals acquired defensive end / linebacker Chandler Jones from the New England Patriots for offensive lineman Jonathan Cooper and a 2nd-round draft pick in 2016.
What does it give the Arizona Cardinals?
The contending Cardinals get a 2015 Pro Bowl playmaker in Jones, so that alone is a coup. He's much more ready to help the team win (on the defensive side) than Cooper (on the offensive side) and his addition helps bolster a group that needs his sacks. Jones is a rising star in his prime, and may yet be the final piece of the puzzle for an Arizona squad seemingly on the verge of a championship. This essentially gives the Cards an equally elite 'D' to go with their already-elite 'O.'
What does it give the New England Patriots?
Turnover amongst New England's key offensive linemen has been fairly regular the past few years, and Cooper can be a cornerstone piece for them to go along with line anchor Nate Solder. With a little more coaching and development Cooper might become a Pro Bowl starter, so he--plus the excellent draft pick--are more than good compensation for the loss of Jones (although the Pats will miss Jones' sacks and versatility on defense). Additionally, New England saves some money by not having to give Jones the huge raise that appears inevitable in the near future.
Fantasy Impact
Jones can play either the end spot or outside linebacker, but the latter seems most likely (since big Red Bryant has been re-signed up front). Expect Jones to be just as productive with the Cards as he was with the Patriots, and for his presence to slow the 2016 fantasy relevance of teammate pass-rushers such as Frostee Rucker and Markus Golden. Offensive linemen have little to no statistical value in most fantasy leagues, but Cooper should help most of New England's other key offensive players (especially Tom Brady) stay on top of their respective games.
