STAR TE DAVIS A CATCH FOR DENVER Monday, November 2, 2015
The Denver Broncos acquired tight end Vernon Davis and a 7th-round draft pick in 2016 from the San Francisco 49ers for a 6th-round draft pick in 2016 and a 6th-round draft pick in 2017.
What does it give the Denver Broncos?
The Broncos' offense has taken a surprising step backwards this season, in part due to the free agency loss of star tight end Julius Thomas. While Davis won't cure all of QB Peyton Manning's pass-game ills, Davis will certainly help Denver jump-start its attack. Davis is one of the most athletic and well-rounded tight ends in the game, and he should more than replace what the Broncos have been missing from Thomas.
What does it give the San Francisco 49ers?
San Fran is a team in free-fall lately, and this move signals a likely overhaul is underway. In a related development the Niners this week benched highly-paid QB Colin Kaepernick in favor of backup Blaine Gabbert, so it's clear management is trying to shake things up with this struggling squad. Additionally, the 49ers clear roughly $2.5 million in salary cap room by moving Davis.
Fantasy Impact
Davis immediately gets a huge upgrade in all fantasy formats. He should step in and immediately give Manning the outlet target he needs to balance out the offense, and it won't be surprising if Davis scores multiple touchdowns in some games the rest of the way (while his blocking should help the entire Denver attack). Davis' arrival clearly hurts the fantasy fortunes of underachieving Broncos tight end Owen Daniels; meanwhile on the San Francisco side of the equation, Garrett Celek suddenly becomes a fantasy sleeper (assuming he can get some chemistry going with Gabbert).
