PANTHERS ADD VET ALLEN TO POWER UP PASS RUSH Monday, September 28, 2015
The Carolina Panthers acquired defensive end-linebacker Jared Allen from the Chicago Bears for a 6th-round draft pick in 2016.
What does it give the Carolina Panthers?
Allen is past his prime as a star defender but he still brings dependable leadership and playmaking ability. The Panthers need him, since the squad is currently dealing with injuries to several key defenders (including starting end Charles Johnson). Expect Allen to step in and help shore things up right away at the end position, where he's a more natural fit than at linebacker.
What does it give the Chicago Bears?
It's curious the Bears are trading away a key leader and starter, but Chicago does have a quality replacement for Allen in D-lineman Lamarr Houston. Allen wasn't doing much in his role as an outside linebacker (he's a more natural big end), so the Bears move on here with Houston and others while saving some money from Allen's salary. This also may signal the 0-3 club is looking to next season already.
Fantasy Impact
In fantasy leagues featuring Individual Defensive Players, Allen gets an increase in fantasy value since he'll probably be more productive with the Panthers than he was with the Bears. That said, don't expect him to be an elite option. Houston gets a similar boost with the Bears.
