PATRIOTS DEAL AGAIN, ADD SPEEDY WR SAUNDERS Tuesday, September 1, 2015
The New England Patriots acquired wide receiver Jalen Saunders from the New Orleans Saints for a conditional 7th-round draft pick in 2018.
What does it give the New England Patriots?
The Patriots recently lost promising wideout Josh Boyce to Injured Reserve, so they potentially replace him here with Saunders. While undersized, Saunders is an above-average talent who might be able to duplicate some of the success had by similarly small-but-speedy New England wideouts such as Julian Edelman. Of course, Saunders must make New England's final roster first (but he's a former mid-round draft pick--104th overall--so his chances seem solid).
What does it give the New Orleans Saints?
The Saints are moving toward a more run-happy offense in 2015, so it's not too surprising they aren't stockpiling receivers. Still, they retain Josh Morgan and Joseph Morgan to back up starters Brandin Cooks and Marques Colston, so they're okay depth-wise (and this deal gives them some roster flexibility, plus a bit of financial flexibility, heading into final cuts).
Fantasy Impact
Saunders shouldn't be on anyone's fantasy radar yet but he definitely should get some added sleeper love as a result of this trade. That said, if he makes the Pats' final roster he projects as mostly a replacement for Boyce (meaning he'll be a backup likely used mostly only when New England needs a deep threat). On the New Orleans side of the swap, equally little changes (since Morgan and Morgan will continue to back up Cooks and Colston).
