LIONS CATCH TIGHT END WRIGHT FOR KICKER BRINDZA Monday, August 31, 2015
The Detroit Lions acquired tight end Tim Wright from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for kicker Kyle Brindza.
What does it give the Detroit Lions?
The Lions already have two quality tight ends in catch-first Eric Ebron and block-first Brandon Pettigrew, but usual third option Joseph Fauria might be on the roster bubble. Enter Wright, a proven pass-catcher who can add yet another above-average option to Detroit's already-potent pass attack. It's not a sure thing that either Wright nor Fauria makes the final roster, however. Rookie place-kicker Brindza was expendable because the Lions already have vet Matt Prater.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
The kicker spot in Tampa Bay is seemingly still open, with vet Connor Barth and less-proven Patrick Murray competing for the gig. Brindza can now enter the mix, as he has some talent and the Bucs need all the options they can look at. Wright is a quality receiving tight end but the Bucs already have Austin Seferian-Jenkins starting for them and vet Brandon Myers in the mix, so Kicker is likely a higher priority at this point.
Fantasy Impact
Wright is always a solid tight end fantasy sleeper, although his status as a likely third option makes him more a 'keep on the radar' guy than a draftable option right now. Brindza is probably a player to avoid--even if he wins Tampa Bay's kicker job--because he's unproven in the NFL and most fantasy leagues usually have plenty of options available at kicker on the free agent wire.
