PATS, NINERS FILL DEPTH NEEDS; SWAP CLEVELAND FOR DEVEY Tuesday, August 18, 2015
The New England Patriots acquired tight end Asante Cleveland from the San Francisco 49ers for offensive lineman Jordan Devey.
What does it give the New England Patriots?
The Patriots are simply adding some depth at tight end while waiting for injuries to their regulars to heal up. Cleveland has some untapped talent but hasn't been very productive as a pro, and it's far from certain he'll make New England's final roster. With Rob Gronkowski, Scott Chandler, and Michael Hoomanawanui locked into big roles for 2015, Cleveland won't likely play much even if he sticks with the opening roster.
What does it give the San Francisco 49ers?
Like Cleveland, Devey is a former practice squadder who has proven he can be a solid depth guy at the NFL level. Also like Cleveland, Devey probably won't see regular or major duty even if he sticks with San Francisco's opening roster. He showed he can step in if needed to provide rotational support, but the Niners are mostly just adding depth here to an area where they have a greater need than tight end.
Fantasy Impact
Even if either of Cleveland or Devey manages to win a rotational gig this season with his new respective team, neither is (nor likely will be) a fantasy-worthy player in 2015.
