PATS, BEARS SWAP INTRIGUING PROSPECTS GROY, WELLS Monday, August 10, 2015
The New England Patriots acquired offensive guard Ryan Groy from the Chicago Bears for linebacker Matthew Wells.
What does it give the New England Patriots?
This is a typical move by the Patriots: add an underrated, sneaky-athletic player with a lot of versatility and reap the rewards down the road. Groy probably isn't quite ready for prime time, but he has talent and can play several positions on the O-line (and possibly even a little fullback). Look for him to be in the mix for depth rotation looks on the Patriots offensive line sometime this season.
What does it give the Chicago Bears?
Wells was drafted by the Patriots this year (in the sixth round, No. 178 overall), in part because he has great speed for his size. That said, he's still pretty much an unfinished product at outside linebacker and will be a depth guy for the Bears if he makes the final cut out of the preseason.
Fantasy Impact
This deal has no fantasy impact, since neither Groy nor Wells plays a fantasy-friendly football position (and even if they did, neither is expected to be a significant contributor in 2015).
