PACK PICKS UP RB / KR KNILE DAVIS FROM KC Tuesday, October 18, 2016
The Green Bay Packers acquired running back / return man Knile Davis from the Kansas City Chiefs for a conditional 7th-round draft pick in 2018.
What does it give the Green Bay Packers?
The injury-plagued Packers desperately need the backfield depth Davis brings: starter Eddie Lacy is likely out awhile due to a sore ankle, and top backup James Starks will miss several weeks following knee surgery. Davis is a capable backup running back who has even shown some promise as a starter (when needed), and he also gives Green Bay a nice depth boost in the return game. That said, Davis has a career yards-per-carry average of just 3.3, so don't expect miracles.
What does it give the Kansas City Chiefs?
Kansas City's uncommon depth at running back made Davis expendable. All three of the team's remaining backs (Jamaal Charles, Spencer Ware, and Charcandrick West) have proven capable of excelling as starters, making Davis the odd man out. Additionally, the emergence of Tyreek Hill as KC's return ace further made Davis a player the Chiefs can afford to move. The draft pick isn't much of a return, but at least the Chiefs get to cut some salary.
Fantasy Impact
The Packers player to add in fantasy (at least in the short term) is Ty Montgomery. Even though he's a wideout, Montgomery has lined up at running back lately and he obviously knows the KC playbook better than Davis at this point. Add in that Montgomery returns kicks, and he might be a do-it-all fantasy playmaker in Week 7 and possibly beyond. As for Davis, despite his poor career yards-per-game rushing average (3.3) he showed in 2014 that he can be a capable starting tailback if needed. On top of that, he's a good receiver out of the backfield so at the very least he should see a regular role (even when Lacy is fully healthy). Those factors make Davis an interesting fantasy addition for the next few weeks, and possibly for longer (depending on how long Starks is out). Fullback Aaron Ripkowski is also in the mix for carries. This deal doesn't change anything fantasy-wise for Kansas City's players.
