DOLPHINS DEAL FOR BREIDA Saturday, April 25, 2020
The Miami Dolphins acquired running back Matt Breida from the San Francisco 49ers for a fifth-round draft pick in 2020.
What does it give the Miami Dolphins?
The Dolphins are paper thin at the running back position, with veteran free agent acquisition Jordan Howard their only viable option. So, it makes sense that Miami sent a fifth rounder to San Francisco for Breida (who has shown flashes of quality production with the 49ers). Breida should provide a speed element to the backfield, so he should work well in tandem with Howard (who is more of a bruiser).
What does it give the San Francisco 49ers?
Someone had to go. Raheem Mostert emerged as the 49ers' top running back last season, while Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon provide excellent depth (when healthy). Jeff Wilson Jr. is also in the mix, so Breida wound up being the odd man out. In return, San Francisco received the 153rd overall pick in this year's draft from Miami. With that pick, the Niners selected O-lineman Colton McKivitiz.
Fantasy Impact
Breida's fantasy stock has just been shot out of a cannon, as he will be no worse than second on Miami's depth chart when training camp rolls around (instead of fifth! had he remained in San Francisco). This move hurts Howard's fantasy value a little, while slightly improving that of Coleman and McKinnon.
