BEARS BRING IN QB NICK FOLES Tuesday, March 31, 2020
The Chicago Bears acquired quarterback Nick Foles from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a fourth-round draft pick in 2020.
What does it give the Chicago Bears?
This move, the Bears adding an experienced quarterback this off-season, was fully expected. It was just a matter of which veteran signal caller. Foles brings Super Bowl experience and oodles of savvy to Chicago, a team that on paper has everything needed to get to the Super Bowl. The Bears were slowed by mediocre quarterback play last season, so expect Foles to take over for Mitchell Trubisky as the No. 1 man in 2020. Trubisky's future in Chicago is now clearly very much in doubt.
What does it give the Jacksonville Jaguars?
The Jaguars reversed course with Foles only a year after signing him as a free agent. This deal is partly because of Foles' expensive contract and partly because of how well Gardner Minshew II played in Foles' absence in 2019. Jacksonville now seems fully committed to Minshew II as the starter, so Foles was shipped out in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in this year's draft. The Jags will surely add another quarterback at some point to compete for the backup job.
Fantasy Impact
The Bears may suggest that the arrival of Foles is to provide competition for Trubisky. However, fantasy leaguers should cut bait with the latter ASAP. As for Foles, his situation in Chicago is similar to what he had in Jacksonville to begin 2019. So, his value remains fairly steady (if unspectacular). This trade helps Minshew II the most. He now appears to be the clear-cut starter for the Jaguars. He offers at least as much fantasy upside as Foles, perhaps even more (and far more than Trubisky at this point).
