NATE HAIRSTON HEADED TO THE JETS Wednesday, August 28, 2019
The New York Jets acquired cornerback Nate Hairston from the Indianapolis Colts for a sixth-round draft pick in 2020.
What does it give the New York Jets?
For the Jets, any help at corner should be welcomed at this point. Hairston is still young enough, with some NFL starting experience, so he should help New York's secondary greatly. Look for Hairston to start opposite Trumaine Johnson as soon as he gets up to speed with the defensive playbook, with Darryl Roberts likely moving to the slot corner position (where he could battle Brian Poole for playing time). At worst, Hairston should provide invaluable depth even if he does not start for the Jets.
What does it give the Indianapolis Colts?
The Colts felt far more comfortable about their secondary situation than the Jets did, which enabled them to trade Hairston for a sixth-rounder at this time. The fact the Colts drafted Rock Ya-Sin in the second round of the 2019 draft (34th overall) was likely another reason why Hairston was deemed expendable. Ya-Sin is expected to play a lot in the slot for Indianapolis this season, while Kenny Moore and Pierre Desir remain the starting cornerbacks for the Colts.
Fantasy Impact
There is no fantasy impact here, at least not from an individual level. Hairston's arrival should improve the Jets' overall defense, but they remain a middle-of-the-pack option as a fantasy defense in most league formats.
