DEE FORD DEALT TO THE 49ERS Wednesday, March 13, 2019
The San Francisco 49ers acquired linebacker Dee Ford from the Kansas City Chiefs for a second-round draft pick in 2020.
What does it give the San Francisco 49ers?
This is a curious trade all around. For San Francisco, adding Ford was deemed necessary in order to jump-start the team's pass rush. However, Ford has played outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense in Kansas City. The 49ers employ a 4-3 defense, so it will be interesting to see how Ford is used in his new home. He should provide pressure off the edge, regardless. Plus, the Niners did not give up too much to get him.
What does it give the Kansas City Chiefs?
For the Chiefs, this move was made necessary because Kansas City is moving from a 3-4 base defense to a 4-3 in 2019 (which meant Ford was no longer a good fit for the new scheme). That said, the team still designated him its franchise player this off-season. Moreover, the 49ers also deploy a 4-3 base defense, yet still see the value in having Ford on the team. Only one of these two teams is right.
Fantasy Impact
Ford was a sacks machine in Kansas City, but it is not yet clear how he will be used in San Francisco. So for now, he has lost some value in IDP fantasy leagues. That said, he would have lost even more value had he remained in KC's defense under new coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
