MICHAEL BENNETT BROUGHT IN BY NEW ENGLAND Thursday, March 14, 2019
The New England Patriots acquired defensive lineman Michael Bennett and a seventh-round draft pick in 2020 from the Philadelphia Eagles for a fifth-round draft pick in 2020.
What does it give the New England Patriots?
It is a bit strange to see the two participants in the 2018 Super Bowl dealing with each other, but adding Bennett fills a big need for the Patriots. Bennett, who turns 34 in November, can play both defensive tackle and defensive end. He will probably be needed more on the outside for a New England squad on the verge of losing top pass-rusher Trey Flowers to free agency.
What does it give the Philadelphia Eagles?
For Philadelphia, the prime motivation here was shedding Bennett's $7.2 million salary-cap hit. They were even rumored to be considering releasing the veteran lineman. Instead, New England provided the Eagles with the right compensation in return and a deal was struck. Philly will upgrade one of the picks in the '20 draft and get some cap relief here. This move helps both teams.
Fantasy Impact
Bennett could become a decent source for sacks in 2019, though he is expected to be a part-time player for the Pats. He should not be drafted in most IDP (individual defensive player) leagues but could become an in-season addition in deeper formats.
