APPLE ADDED TO THE SAINTS' SECONDARY Tuesday, October 23, 2018
The New Orleans Saints acquired cornerback Eli Apple from the New York Giants for a fourth-round draft pick in 2019 and a seventh-round draft pick in 2020.
What does it give the New Orleans Saints?
The Saints are going for another Super Bowl appearance while veteran quarterback Drew Brees is still at the top of his game (at age 39!). So, adding Apple to their secondary makes sense. They surrendered two draft picks, but the future is clearly now in New Orleans. Apple may push starters Ken Crawley and Marshon Lattimore or provide quality depth for the Saints.
What does it give the New York Giants?
New York is in deep trouble, and trading away a starting cornerback in Apple may just be the beginning of a series of changes to the struggling squad. With Apple gone, expect B.W. Webb and Antonio Hamilton to receive more playing time in the Giants' secondary. Taking a page out of the Raiders' playbook, New York appears to be playing for next season--already.
Fantasy Impact
Apple is a middling IDP (individual defensive player) league option, and his playing time may drop moving to the contending Saints. In fact, all of Apple, Crawley and Lattimore have less value when all three are now on the same team.
