New York Jets AFC East
Trade Details
JETS JETTISON QB HACKENBERG TO THE RAIDERS Tuesday, May 22, 2018
The Oakland Raiders acquired quarterback Christian Hackenberg from the New York Jets for a conditional 7th-round draft pick in 2019.
What does it give the Las Vegas Raiders?
The Raiders have a star in place as their starting QB (Derek Carr), but their backup situation is much less certain. Expect Hackenberg to get a chance at pushing EJ Manuel and Connor Cook for the right to be Carr's top backup. That said, Hackenberg's lack of progress in the NFL and questions about his overall maturity make this a risky move.
What does it give the New York Jets?
Hackenberg simply didn't develop the way the Jets were hoping when they drafted him in the second round in 2016. Add to that his comments to media seeming to blame the coaching staff for his lack of progress, and it's clear both he and the Jets are ready to move on. New York still has two quality vets (Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater) and a gifted heir apparent (Sam Darnold) at quarterback, so Hackenberg and his contract were expendable.
Fantasy Impact
This trade has almost no likely fantasy impact. It would take a long-term injury to Carr for Hackenberg to find his way onto the fantasy radar, and even then he has proven nothing yet in terms of production at the pro level.
