PATS PRY D-TACKLE SHELTON FROM BROWNS Wednesday, March 14, 2018
The New England Patriots acquired defensive tackle Danny Shelton and a 5th-round draft pick in 2018 from the Cleveland Browns for a 3rd-round draft pick in 2019.
What does it give the New England Patriots?
In Shelton the Patriots add a gifted and affordable potential starter with stellar tools. He was the No. 12 overall pick of the 2015 draft, so Shelton is an elite-level talent. He is also a good run-stopping interior defensive lineman, so he's a nice fit for what the Pats like to do on the inside of the D-line. Considering the Pats didn't lose much here in the draft pick department, this can be a real steal.
What does it give the Cleveland Browns?
The Browns have made a flurry of moves lately under GM John Dorsey, and moving Shelton is part of that push to re-tool. He has been solid since getting drafted in '15, but he hasn't quite played up to expectations as an early first-round selection. It seems Cleveland might be ready to give the improving Caleb Brantley a shot at a starting defensive tackle job next season.
Fantasy Impact
There's little fantasy impact here. Shelton has the tools to be a star defensive tackle, and it might just happen with the Pats. That said, even in leagues featuring Individual Defensive Players it might be a reach to expect Shelton to put up fantasy-relevant numbers even if he improves significantly.
