MIAMI SURPRISINGLY MOVES AJAYI TO PHILLY Tuesday, October 31, 2017
The Philadelphia Eagles acquired tailback Jay Ajayi from the Miami Dolphins for a conditional 4th-round draft pick in 2018.
What does it give the Philadelphia Eagles?
The Eagles pull off a trade masterstroke here, capitalizing on Miami's team turmoil and getting a major bargain in Ajayi. In his young career so far Ajayi has shown flashes of dominance and superstar potential, so he can eventually take over as Philly's top tailback and give the team an upgrade. The Eagles looked like a bona fide contender even before this deal, and Ajayi gives them another key puzzle piece in their quest for a championship. This is a steal.
What does it give the Miami Dolphins?
This move by Miami is both surprising and baffling. It's widely known that Dolphins head coach Adam Gase has been unhappy with team chemistry and buy-in of his football philosophy, and this trade is clearly meant to both change the offense's key personnel and send a message to the rest of the team. Unfortunately the team is also giving up one of the most talented tailbacks on the planet in its effort to shift team culture, so this is a high-risk decision by Miami.
Fantasy Impact
Ajayi's fantasy fortunes probably improved somewhat with this deal, even though he may not immediately be the starter for the Eagles. That job still technically belongs to LeGarrette Blount, whose fantasy value gets a significant downgrade following this trade. For the same reasons, backup Wendell Smallwood likely loses any fantasy value he had before this deal. On the Miami side of things, look for Kenyan Drake to possibly get the first look at early-down carries, with Damien Williams and Senorise Perry also in the mix for touches. Drake is probably the only add-worthy back in most fantasy leagues, for now.
