CARDS PRY MUCH-NEEDED PETERSON FROM SAINTS Tuesday, October 10, 2017
The Arizona Cardinals acquired running back Adrian Peterson from the New Orleans Saints for a conditional 6th-round draft pick in 2018.
What does it give the Arizona Cardinals?
This is a bit of a no-brainer by the Cardinals. Since losing the NFL's top running back--David Johnson--to injury at the start of this season, Arizona has fielded the NFL's worst rushing offense (at a league-low 2.6 yards per attempt). Enter Peterson, the aging superstar looking to prove he still has what it takes to be a productive ball-carrier. Expect his new team to give Peterson every chance to be the featured back.
What does it give the New Orleans Saints?
Peterson and the pass-heavy Saints just didn't prove to be a good fit. He averaged single-digit carries with New Orleans, and the impressive emergence of rookie pass-catching back Alvin Kamara essentially turned Peterson into a third-stringer (behind Kamara and stalwart vet Mark Ingram). Things didn't pan out as planned, but at least the Saints get a draft pick here.
Fantasy Impact
Peterson gets a nice fantasy upgrade with this move to Arizona. While it's not reasonable to expect the stellar production he brought a few years ago, A-P should nonetheless be a solid fantasy asset the rest of the way (assuming he stays healthy). All the Cardinals' other running backs (including the recently-released Chris Johnson) lose pretty much all fantasy value for the foreseeable future. On the New Orleans side of the trade, give Ingram and Kamara small bumps up in fantasy appeal the rest of the way.
