STEELERS SNAG SAFETY WILCOX FROM BUCS Sunday, September 3, 2017
The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired safety J.J. Wilcox and a 7th-round draft pick in 2019 from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 6th-round draft pick in 2018.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Steelers?
The Steelers have worked this off-season to improve their depth in the secondary (which included the addition of star Joe Haden), and Wilcox can provide very good depth to the safety rotation. He's a physical player who can also help out on special teams (including kick returns), so this is a solid move by the Steelers--especially since they don't give up too much in the draft pick downgrade.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
Tampa Bay recently signed established veteran safety T.J. Ward, so Wilcox--who has a guaranteed contract--became expendable. This move makes room for Ward, while saving the Bucs some money while upgrading their draft pick situation.
Fantasy Impact
Even in fantasy leagues featuring Individual Defensive Players, Wilcox isn't projected as a starter anytime soon for Pittsburgh. He can be avoided in almost all fantasy formats.
