SEAHAWKS LAND DL SHELDON RICHARDSON Friday, September 1, 2017
The Seattle Seahawks acquired defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson and a seventh-round draft pick in 2018 from the New York Jets for wide receiver Jermaine Kearse, a second-round draft pick in 2018 and a seventh-round draft pick in 2018.
What does it give the Seattle Seahawks?
In Richardson, the Seahawks add another potentially dominant defender for their vaunted group. He can play several different positions but is at his very best when rushing the passer from the interior of the D-line. He has had a few issues since entering the NFL, on and off the field, but is a great addition to the defense if he is in the right frame of mind. Richardson could replace veteran run stuffer Ahtyba Rubin as a starter at defensive tackle and provide way more pass-rushing skills this season.
What does it give the New York Jets?
This is a great transaction for the rebuilding Jets, who land a second rounder in next year's draft. That gives them three fairly early picks to use on replenishing the team's offense. Kearse should also help as a volume receiver for a team that needs plenty more experience and savvy. The Jets' seventh rounder will likely be better than Seattle's, but adding a second rounder is huge for New York. Richardson was playing out of position at outside linebacker for the Jets; something had to give.
Fantasy Impact
Richardson's fantasy stock rises significantly after this deal, as he will now be playing at his more natural defensive tackle position and provide a big pass rush for Seattle. Kearse's stock may also rise, since he becomes the clear No. 1 target for Jets quarterbacks this season. The big loser in this deal is Rubin, whose fantasy value was extremely limited to begin with.
