BENGALS BOOST PASS RUSH DEPTH WITH SMITH Tuesday, April 11, 2017
The Cincinnati Bengals acquired defensive end Chris Smith from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a conditional 7th-round draft pick in 2018.
What does it give the Cincinnati Bengals?
The Bengals are below average in the sacks department, and--while Smith isn't an obvious starter or solution--Smith can help in that department. He's undersized for the end position, but has excellent speed for a pass rusher and is very strong for his size. Don't be surprised if he becomes a situational, rotational member of the Cincy pass rush in 2017.
What does it give the Jacksonville Jaguars?
Jacksonville doesn't feature one of the NFL's better pass rush groups either, but they're signed several new sacks options this off-season (including Calais Campbell) so it appears Smith became expendable. The draft pick return isn't much, but at least the move gives the Jags a little more roster and financial flexibility.
Fantasy Impact
It's tough to see Smith becoming a big-minute starter anytime soon, and even if he does he'll only be radar-worthy as a deep sleeper in fantasy formats featuring individual defensive players.
