PATRIOTS ADD TIGHT END DWAYNE ALLEN Thursday, March 9, 2017
The New England Patriots acquired tight end Dwayne Allen and a sixth-round draft pick in 2017 from the Indianapolis Colts for a fourth-round draft pick in 2017.
What does it give the New England Patriots?
In Allen, the Patriots land an all-round tight end who is still young enough (27) to continue to grow as a football player with his new organization. Allen replaces Martellus Bennett as New England's No. 2 tight end behind the incomparable Rob Gronkowski. Allen will probably be asked to block a lot with the Pats, but his red-zone targets may increase with Tom Brady at the helm.
What does it give the Indianapolis Colts?
For the Colts, this move was made after recently choosing to keep projected starting tight end Jack Doyle in the fold. Therefore, Indianapolis will move forward at the tight end position with Doyle and Erik Swoope, both younger options for quarterback Andrew Luck to throw to. The deal saves Indy a little money and upgrades one of their 2017 draft picks, so it works out well for them.
Fantasy Impact
Allen was somewhat inconsistent during his time in Indianapolis, but he is a major breakout candidate as a Patriot for 2017. His value might be even higher if Gronkowski continues to have trouble staying healthy. This trade also ups the fantasy stock of both Doyle and Swoope with the Colts.
