BROWNS BOOST THEIR 'D' WITH COLLINS Monday, October 31, 2016
The Cleveland Browns acquired linebacker Jamie Collins from the New England Patriots for a conditional 4th-round draft pick in 2018.
What does it give the Cleveland Browns?
Collins should step into the starting lineup immediately and give the Browns a big upgrade at outside linebacker. Look for him to replace the platoon of Cam Johnson and Joe Schobert opposite impressive rookie Emmanuel Ogbah. If Cleveland management can re-sign Collins for the long-term and he can get his overall game back on track, this could prove to be a steal. If not, the team can move on this summer when Collins becomes a free agent; so overall this is a solid risk by the Browns.
What does it give the New England Patriots?
While this deal is a shocker at first glance, it makes some sense for the Patriots. Collins' tackle rate has gradually dipped the past two seasons, and he hasn't been producing much at all in the sacks department this season either. Factor in as well that he's a free agent after this season--one who should command a big payday--and this move doesn't seem as shocking for the cost-conscious Pats. Recently-acquired (and underrated) linebacker Kyle Van Noy helps fill the depth void, while rookie Elandon Roberts and the talented Barkevious Mingo step up in Collins' place.
Fantasy Impact
No one involved in nor connected to this deal has been particularly productive in the Individual Defensive Player fantasy football universe lately, but rookie Roberts may be worth a look if he can hold down his newly-cemented starting job with the Patriots.
