DENVER TAKES TIGHT END DERBY FROM NEW ENGLAND Tuesday, October 25, 2016
The Denver Broncos acquired tight end A.J. Derby from the New England Patriots for a 5th-round draft pick in 2017.
What does it give the Denver Broncos?
Adding Derby makes some sense for Denver, since the Broncos have two very young quarterbacks in need of outlet options and the incumbent tight ends haven't been very productive. That said, Derby is far from a proven producer in the receiving department. Expect him to back up Virgil Green, John Phillips, and Jeff Heuerman early on.
What does it give the New England Patriots?
It's hard to see a clear reason the Pats move Derby here, since they currently have no healthy tight end depth behind stars Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett. That said, this may be more about freeing up some roster space for tailback Dion Lewis, who may return soon.
Fantasy Impact
There is no fantasy impact with this deal, since Derby is a backup who has produced little fantasy-wise so far in his young career (and isn't a top receiving prospect).
